In 1913, Lloyd "Jake" Smoot was living in Knox, Illinois when a devastating storm furiously slammed the Great Lakes, known as the Great Lakes Storm of 1913. When the United States declared war on Germany in 1917, officially entering World War I, Lloyd "Jake" Smoot was probably living in Knox, Illinois. Lloyd "Jake" Smoot was a young boy living in Clearspring, Indiana, in 1920, around the time the Boy Scouts of America was founded.
